2007 Utah Envirothon teams at the SLC landfill
This year’s Utah Envirothon was held May 11-12 in Salt Lake County at the West Valley Family Fitness Center and the Salt Lake Valley Landfill. Twelve teams competed. The field site, at the landfill, was alongside a set of man-made wetlands and by a methane recapture and conversion facility. The teams learned about wildlife, forestry, soils/land use and aquatic ecology, and this year’s current issue: alternative/renewable energy. For the first time, the winning team members were offered scholarships from the Utah State University College of Natural Resources.
The five-member teams were judged on their oral presentations at the West Valley Family Fitness Center on Friday night. Each team presented their solution to a scenario that was based on the use of more alternative/renewable energy by residents in Utah.
The Salt Lake Conservation District served as host district and contributed Friday night dinner. In addition, the Blacksmith Fork Conservation District provided a snack on Saturday. Thank you to the members of the boards for serving dinner and snacks. Thank you to Wendell Stembridge (Vice-President), Doug Bateman and Jon White (chairmen), and Therese Meyer (supervisor) for taking the time to speak to the group.

Following the state competition, the Blacksmith Fork 4-H team has begun preparing for the Canon Envirothon. This year’s Canon Envirothon competition will be held July 29-August 3 at Hobart & William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. The Utah Envirothon will pay for all lodging and transportation costs.
The winning FFA team from Lehi High School will go to Indianapolis, In., in October to compete at the National FFA Convention in the Natural Resource Career Development Event.
Many thanks to all the conservation districts who sponsored teams and to all the sponsoring partners of the Utah Envirothon. You make it all possible!
